Biocontrol on our plantations

Biocontrol on our Farm 🌵

At OPUS Cactus®, we believe the healthiest farms are those that work with nature, not against it. That’s why at our Waterkloof Research Center we’ve recently installed bat houses across the farm.

🦇We are collaborating with bats! Bats will be our first line of defense against the cactoblastis moth, a potentially major threat to cactus crops. Each night, a single bat can eat thousands of insects, making them powerful allies in reducing pest pressure naturally.

🦋This is part of our Integrated Pest Management approach, where we prioritize biological solutions and minimize insecticide use, working toward healthier farms and a better world.

By encouraging bat populations to thrive alongside our spineless Opuntia fields, we are:
🌙 Harnessing bats as natural biocontrol against nocturnal pests
🌍 Promoting biodiversity by creating habitat for native species
🌱 Reinforcing our commitment to regenerative, sustainable farming

Over the next few weeks, we are excited to watch these bat houses come to life as new residents move in. We partnered with EcoSolutions (https://lnkd.in/gkrZc4Je) to install the bat houses, proudly supporting a South African business.

This is one more step in our broader mission: building agricultural systems that are productive, climate-adapted, all while being deeply rooted in ecological balance.
